Apple Inc. released its latest version of mobile operating system, iOS 6 on September 19, packed with a bevy of new features and updates like an updated Siri functionality, deeper integration witrh Facebook and Passbook organization.

However, among other changes, one feature that stands apart is the introduction of the new Apple-designed Maps. Till date, Apple had partnered with Google for its mapping data requirements. In the earlier versions of its mobile operating systems, Apple used a map application that was made by the company but powered by Google’s mapping services.

However, with the launch of its Android software for tablets and phones, Google has become more of a competitor than a partner company for Apple and so, the latter decided to take full control of its various software applications, the New York Times mentioned in a report.

With the newly released Apple iPhone 5, the iOS 6 upgrade is available as an over-the-air (OTA) download. Even if you did not pre-order an iPhone 5, you can still upgrade your iPhone devices; iPad and iPod Touch to this latest version of iOS easily.
